Our next guest is Lisa Alward from Bella Vie Interiors. She shares her thoughts on how to style your house like a professional with the pieces below.
Versatile Design: Satara White Vela Coffee Table
Given Queensland is the Sunshine State, I’m still enamoured by the number of months you can enjoy the outdoor lifestyle. The design lines in the top of this coffee table allow water to drain off the top easily which means you can leave it in uncovered areas without worrying about water pooling on top of it.
Add a potted plant to the centre of the table for an instant pop of colour. If keeping plants alive is not your thing, there’s plenty of artificial plants that look amazing. If you’re entertaining, simply add a tray with a jug of your favourite drink and a few glasses.
This is a piece you can keep for a while. The simplicity of its design and durable powder coated surface lend itself to blending with many different outdoor pieces.
TOP TIP: My only tip for selecting a coffee table for outdoors is to ensure it is big enough to suit the space. If your outdoor area has larger sofas or armchairs, layer the Vela Coffee Table with the Teak Norfolk Square Coffee Table. This creates a relaxed, informal setting for a larger space and the timber adds a lovely warmth.
Complete Outdoor & Indoor Chair: Granada Butterfly Chair
This chair is perfect for smaller spaces. Its’ see-through design means it’s barely there making it perfect for balconies, porches and as additional seating with an outdoor sofa. Made from marine grade materials, this chair can be used both indoors and outdoors.
You can really personalise these chairs by adding any colour of cushions you love. Hampton’s style – add some soft blue or natural; Scandi style – soft grey or blush or even a sheepskin throw if it’s indoors. I’d definitely add a small side table between a pair of these. The Samera Round Side Table is one of my favourites. Colour match with white or add some striking contrast with the black.
The durable nature of these chairs means you’ll no doubt have them awhile. Update them to suit current styling trends with new cushions as you refresh your outdoor entertaining area.
TOP TIP: These chairs provide great additional seating for when you have more guests than seats. They’re easy to move between indoors and outdoors and you simply hose them down to give them a good clean.
Timber Pedestal Table: Parquetry Top Pedestal Round Dining Table
I love the pedestal base and timber top on this table. It adds warmth and a comfortable, homely feel to a home.
This table is perfect for a sunny breakfast nook or casual dining area. Its classic style makes it perfect for a Hampton’s style interior or typical Queenslander home. Add your favourite dining chair in timber or mix it up with black or white chairs to suit your home décor. When it’s not meal time pop a vase of flowers in the centre to brighten up your home.
This is one of those pieces that is definitely a classic. This is a piece that will stay with you for years. I can see grandchildren sharing the table in years to come
TOP TIP: Your table needs to allow for the number of people you want to seat comfortably and still leave enough room to walk around it. Try to allow at least 1-1.2m from the table to the wall or adjacent furniture. As a guide a 120cm table will seat 4 and 140-150cm table will seat 6. This will depend on your chairs, so it’s wise to check.
What’s the biggest mistake someone can make when styling their own home?
The biggest mistake I see is rugs that are far too small for a room. A large rug grounds the space so the furniture doesn’t appear to just float around.
Lisa’s Top Design Tip
My number one tip is that if you are not confident decorating your home then get help. A successful room is one that has been planned and if like many people you can’t visualise the space, it helps to get a plan to work from. Interior Designers or Decorators can work to suit your budget and style, you just need to ask around until you find one that ‘fits’ you. If your budget allows you can makeover a whole room or home at once, but if not, then a scaled floor plan and a shopping list will help you to bring your room together piece by piece at your own pace. The result will be a cohesive space that pieces that work together.
Interior Designer Profile – About Lisa Alward
Lisa started Bella Vie Interiors 5 years ago while living in Canberra and she quickly had a small team of four employees working with her in under two years. She relocated to Brisbane in January 2018 for her husband’s work and has continued her business here.
She loves designing kitchens, bathrooms and laundries. Most of her clients are undertaking major renovations or are building a new home and she becomes involved in selecting all the fixtures and finishes.
Lisa’s favourite saying from Bunny Williams: “If you love something it will work. That’s the only real rule.”
“It’s something I ask my clients when they’re deciding what goes and what stays,” Lisa says. “Honestly, if you really love something in your home, then it should stay. Likewise, if you see furniture or décor in a store that you just have to have. If a space is designed to suit you, then whatever you love will blend perfectly and you’ll smile every time you look at it.”
